Presentation Abstract
The presentation will review the author’s
doctoral research on values-based leadership (VBL)
skills, values and concepts, and the applicability
of the VBL to the ethical managing of major constructed
facilities projects.
The purpose of the subject research study was
to determine the suitability of a VBL approach
for the construction industry, with a focus on
improving the contractual partnerships within the
commercial and industrial sectors. The research
problem addressed in the study was "How to
improve overall construction partnerships, irrespective
of the project delivery system, that will ethically
satisfy all of the needs, requirements, and expectations
of the stakeholders involved in the constructed
facility process." The conducted research
used a mixed methods approach to assess the critical
elements of this topic. The criteria for performance
excellence embodied in the Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award offered a framework to develop the
list of questions for both the interviews and focus
groups (qualitative), and the survey (quantitative).
Leadership is one of the seven categories that
make up the Baldrige core values and concepts.
The presentation will review the research results,
which shows the values-based leadership traits
of trust, integrity, and people-orientation as
critical to success in the construction industry.
The research results exhibits the suitability of
values-based leadership for improving the business
partnerships within the construction industry,
and the applicability of this approach to the leading
of constructed facilities programs from concept
through completion. Finally, the research demonstrates
the correlation between values-based leadership
and the instilling of sound ethical conduct by
all parties involved, as important components in
improving the management and business performance
of constructed facilities projects. |
