Project Management as a Strategic Competency

Monday, September 12Presenter: Dr. Bill Moylan

The 20th century brought organizational management of routine operations to a high level. But executing change in an increasingly fast-paced and competitive world remained a challenge – one that project management has evolved to meet. This presentation emphasizes that project management is a profession distinct from “management in general,” and gives examples of organizations that are aligning their projects and programs with strategic goals.

Outreach Programs

Community and Academic Outreach recently partnered to complete sessions of the “PMI Skills for Life” with two local community organizations—St. Thomas Syro Malabar Church in April, and New Life in Christ Ministries in June. Corporate Outreach completed its second Corporate Roundtable on June 30th with Eaton Corporation as the host presenter on the topic of project management maturity within Eaton; Johnson Controls (JCI) was the host presenter on the topic of program management at JCI for the previous roundtable in March. Academic Outreach participated in the recent Career Day event in May at Walsh College. Many thanks and congratulations to the volunteer team members for all their time and effort to make these activities successful. PMI® News

Region 4 Conference
PMI® Region 4 is the largest of PMI’s 13 regions and includes 24 chapters total (five are in Michigan). Held in Saratoga Springs (NY) and hosted by PMI Upstate New York Chapter, the theme of this two-day Leadership Conference on June 11-12 was “Planned Leadership, Productive Organizations” with an attendance of approximately 80 chapter leaders, including several from the Great Lakes Chapter. It proved to be a very worthwhile networking and sharing event covering topics such as communications, training, governance, membership, and role definition.

Conference speakers provided very motivating talks on related topics. PMI also had representatives from its PMI Educational Foundation (PMIef), Learning Systems and Information Technology groups. One presentation from PMIef was from a local high school teacher and several students who gave an update on their semester-long course using PMI provided curricula on a school project. Another speaker discussed how project management and leadership helped him make dramatic improvements to the Saratoga Regional YMCA.
